Be assured: the City is not planning to close the Dog Park.

Included in the proposed General Plan Update are changes to land use designations for select areas of the City. The areas identified are characterized by properties that, over a 20-year planning horizon, will be in-transition from their long-standing uses to new, yet-to-be identified, uses. The Yorba Park area is one of these locations due to the uncertain future of the OUSD and YMCA facilities and the landfill issues on the Yorba Park/Dog Park site.

Recognizing the popularity of the Dog Park, the contribution it makes to the City’s recreational facilities and the efforts of the ODPA, the City is proposing a General Plan land use scenario that:
· maintains the underlying Open Space-Park for the Yorba Park/Dog Park BMX track
· maintains the Public Facilities and Institutions designation for the OUSD/YMCA site
· creates a new Yorba Commercial Overlay for that entire area

The Yorba Commercial Overlay would accommodate future commercial redevelopment only in the event that a private developer agrees to re-establish the Dog Park on an alternative location in the City and/or significantly contribute to providing replacement open space and recreational facilities elsewhere in the City.

Any such project that may come forward through this process in the years ahead would involve a formal review process with opportunities for public review and comment.
